Made in Reverie

Coffee and Cigarettes in 2027

3 a.m. in a black-and-white diner. Vera and Milo start with the rain, then the coffee, then what’s real, and it becomes clear they aren’t quite what they seem. Neither is the waitress.

  • Three characters, each speaking in their own voice
  • Whole scenes of up to 30 seconds in one take
  • The same faces in every shot, close-ups included
  • Made for about 1,190 credits

How it was made

The dialogue was written first and settled before any video: small talk that turns into snobbery about the real thing, with the tells that Vera and Milo are synthetic arriving one at a time.

Each character has a reference portrait and their own voice, made from a short sample. Every scene was rendered with Kling 4 as one take of up to 30 seconds, with the lines in the prompt, so they speak in their own voices and the film cuts to close-ups within a take on its own.

Scenes that run on from each other were made as continuations, starting on the last frame of the scene before, so the conversation never jumps. Dot gives herself away at the counter with one line, delivered as brightly and agreeably as an assistant: “You’re absolutely right. Just the coffee.”

An original jazz score sits low under the dialogue and stops dead when the whole diner freezes.
